ARTIST’S PRODUCTION SPACE, LOQUAIPLATZ, VIENNA

Special Mention, Architectural Association of Ireland Awards 2011

An attempt is made to craft a typology that challenges the preconceptions of an artist’s production space as something divorced from public engagement and discourse. Two existing city centre ground floor shops in Vienna are modified to accommodate a 150m2 art/work/dining space. The long, windowed nave space is served by a number of alcoves housing kitchen, storage area and ancillary accommodation. A finely polished concrete floor slab, a central spine of power services (floor sockets and lighting track to ceiling) and a number of robust stone elements (two island units and a long continuous countertop to the rear) carefully structure the space.
